World Monuments Fund è la principale organizzazione indipendente dedicata a salvare i siti mondiali in pericolo. Per quasi 50 anni, lavorando in 100 paesi, esperti qualificati hanno applicato tecniche collaudate ed efficaci per la conservazione di importanti siti del patrimonio architettonico e culturale di tutto il mondo. Attraverso la collaborazione con le comunità locali, i governi e i possibili finanziatori, WMF cerca di ispirare un costante impegno nella tutela del patrimonio culturale per le generazioni future. L’attenzione per le architetture in terra risale ai primi anni ‘70; da allora si registra un notevole approfondimento conoscitivo su tale patrimonio, a cui tuttavia non sembra corrispondere ovunque una prassi conservativa efficace. Gli interventi sull’architettura in terra, infatti, sono generalmente volti al ripristino, con esiti spesso falsificanti. Oggi è opportuna una riflessione teorica per orientare gli interventi in una direzione più strettamente conservativa; a questo proposito la ricerca scientifica può fornire un contributo determinante per la scelta di materiali di restauro che consentano di intervenire in modo compatibile ma distinguibile.

Today there is a remarkable knowledge of this architectural heritage, but there is not an effective evolution of theorical reflection; in fact the operative method of earthen architecture recovery is directed more to restore rather to conservation, especially as regards the building in use.
All this offers the opportunity for a reflection about the basic principles of conservation, but also for orienting restoration works of historical earthen architectures towards a more conservative direction, taking care of their authenticity.
